Quedas em idosos

Abstract

In the elderly population, the falls is a big problem to public health, recognizing its physical, psychological, economic and social dimension. Inherent to the occurrence of this event are series of risk factors, like the age, lack of balance, sedentary lifestyle, chronic diseases, polypharmacy and the environment, that must be identified and prevented. The lack of balance is typical on the elderly and constitutes one of the main responsible problems for the occurrence of falls. In the clinical practice, a good clinical history and a good physical examination are very important as way to identify the ones’ with the risk of falls. There are also a series of tests for the balance that can be applied. Notwithstanding, as a way of prevention for the occurrence of falls, there are some measures that can be adopted, mainly regarding the environment area and physical activity programs. This work starts with a general perspective view of the subject, emphasizing the level of its epidemiology. Moreover other topics were developed, like the falls physiopathology, the risk factors, the evaluation and prevention of these risks. So, to fulfill these objectives/topics it was made a bibliographic review related to these subjects in articles published starting from the year of 2010, inclusive till now.
