A vitamina D nos idosos

A vitamina D nos idosos

Abstract

Vitamin D is a fat soluble vitamin and it has actions on multiple organs and tissues. Its role in bone metabolism has been known for many years, but recently activity in muscle, brain, prostate, breast, colon, heart, immune system cells, pancreatic and the vascular system have also been described. Among the effects are regulation of phospho-calcium metabolism, inhibition of cell proliferation, induction of cell differentiation, inhibition of angiogenesis, stimulation of insulin production, inhibiting renin production and immunomodulation. So, I conducted a literature review of the last ten years, particularly focusing on the effects of this vitamin in the elderly, a very susceptible population to the development of pathology and in which the deficiency of this vitamin is particularly prevalent and worrying. Throughout the review I found that there are several studies describing an association between vitamin D deficiency and common diseases in the elderly, such as osteoporosis, fractures, cardiovascular disease, cancer, infections, dementia and frailty syndrome. Supplementation with vitamin D should be considered in this population, because it is an easy and safe method to prevent this vitamin deficiency.
