Abstract

Family unpredictability defined as the absence of consistent family behavior standards and family regulation systems consists of a major domain of the family dynamics that allows to understand how a family functions in a more comprising manner. This construct, according to some researches, presents associations with important dimensions of the person’s life. Therefore, this project aims to present preliminary studies of translation, adapting and validation of Lisa Ross and Jennifer McDuff’s Retrospective - Family Unpredictability Scale (Retro-FUS) for Portugal, using a sample of 261 higher education students of the University of Coimbra. The study seeks to test this instrument with regards to the analysis of dimensionality, liability, correlations and some complementary studies. The relation between the retrospective family unpredictability and the future time perspective is also under analysis, when applying the Retrospective - Family Unpredictability Scale (Ross & McDuff, 2008) and the Future Time Perspective Scale (Husman & Shell, 2007). The results suggest that the Retro-FUS has good performance levels on dimensionality, following the original structure of the instrument and also good performance levels on liability for domains such as discipline, motherhood and fatherhood affection. For domains such as finance and meals, the values for liability are less satisfactory. All the domains present a positive direction when correlated statistically. The correlations concerning family unpredictability and the future time perspective confirm the existing studies that indicate a negative correlation between these two variables.
