Morte súbita no adulto: fatores de risco

Authors: Martins, Adriana Sofia Camões;

Morte súbita no adulto: fatores de risco

Abstract

Introduction: Sudden Death remains an important Public Health problem, namely in what concerns diagnosis and control of risk factors. Objective: The present study aims to obtain both Sudden Death incidence in Adults and underlying risk factors. Material and Methods: The author reviewed the files of autopsies performed at the INMLCF, I.P. to victims aged ≥ 18 years-old (n=1053), that died during the year 2010 at the Central Area of Portugal and Islands (Madeira, Azores). Data was then submitted to statistical analysis. Results: Sudden Death incidence in Adults was 45.3%. The main death causes were cardiovascular. Among the multiple risk factors disclosed, the most relevant were: male gender, old age, cardiovascular pathological personal antecedents (ischaemic). Discussion and Conclusion: Sudden Death incidence in Adults is high. Thus, the control of known risk factors, the search/diagnosis of new ones, the evaluation of risk factors association (which may increase the risk) – either by measures of first or secondary prevention – is vital in the attempt to reduce the number of fatal events.
