Desidratação no idoso

Desidratação no idoso

Abstract

Dehydration is the most common fluid and electrolyte disorder in elderly people. No definition of dehydration exists. Nevertheless is commonly used to refer to any loss of body water at a rate greater than the body can replace it. Elderly people are more susceptible to dehydration not only because of the age-related physiological changes, but also because of the presence of pathological, iatrogenic, social and environmental risk factors. Furthermore, clinical signs and laboratory tests have decreased specificity with aging, which complicates the diagnosis even more. Health care providers should double their attention in order to early diagnose dehydration and enable its proper treatment. In the absence of treatment, morbidity and mortality rates are towering and the last one can even reach 50%. Finally, the prevention of dehydration is vital in the maintenance of elderly’s quality of life not only in the hospitals but also in nursing homes and even in their own homes. The main purpose of this paper is to review the available knowledge on aging and dehydration based on the most recent literature on the subject
