Abstract

This study main objective was to understand the social representations of luso-tropicalism and the emotions associated with the presence of immigrants in the Portuguese labor market. The sample consists of 148 Portuguese university students and was collected using selfadministered questionnaires. Given the scarcity of literature review and construction process in which the instruments are still in, this research is in a purely exploratory nature. The results confirm previous studies, suggesting the ineffectiveness of the Luso-tropicalism as prejudice inhibition mechanism and the existence of negative emotions associated with the presence of immigrants in the Portuguese labor market, consistent with the perception of a threat that is likely to give discriminatory behavior.
