Ritmos circadianos e perturbações de humor

Abstract

Circadian rhythms are endogenous rhythms that control various biological processes and have a period of approximately 24 hours. These rhythms are normally synchronized with physical and social environment, under the regulation of the suprachiasmatic nucleus which is influenced by photic and non-photic stimuli. Evidence suggests the existence of a link between the deregulation of these rhythms and the pathophysiology of mood disorders. This review was made based on articles on circadian rhythms, mood disorders and antidepressant treatment directed at deregulated circadian rhythms, and 57 scientific articles were included. A summary of the information analyzed is presented here, which includes an initial explanation of the anatomical, physiological and genetic basis of circadian rhythms, followed by the deregulation mechanisms and rhythms commonly deregulated in mood disorders, and finally some antidepressant treatment options directed at deregulated circadian rhythms. It is concluded that the existence of a bidirectional link between mood disorders and circadian rhythms is probable and treatment options seem effective.
