Abstract

Through metaphors of choreography and calligraphy, the fiction of António Lobo Antunes roams in fundamental directions that range from phantasmagorization of the house to the (in)communicability in family relations. On reading a set of novels in which remains the writing of phantoms and the (non)affections, we understand that, besides representing the interior worldview, each figure represents human emotions that are projected in stunning and stunningly ghostly houses, composing a stanza in ruins. By this means, the emotional experience of the space is configured as a dwelling place of evanescent ghosts, which remain present in the memory and imagination of characters bound to an emptied quotidian life and to houses that gradually become depopulated. By visiting these houses, it is verified the presence of those who kept abandoning these spaces, enabling the construction of a discourse about the incursion into the antunian houses and the specters dwelling there. This observation leads to the implication that the dissolution occurs simultaneous with the dissection of family and with the search for the ghosts’ forms of embodiment, such as archives, living together, photography or atmospheres in which silence arises. Thus it is made understood that living together with the ghosts is another form to tell the share of absence. It is the illusionary material that permits materializing the return of what was thought lost; it also and (unfortunately) only embodies the absent object, imbuing it with full sense. It is precisely in this sense that one can be searching thoroughly, sometimes in vain, for archives, photographies and safes in such a way that the only remaining hypothesis is to recreate the lacking images. This thesis proposes a research on what is spectral – it is not substance, or essence, or presence – and a reflection on heirlooms and generations, and generations of ghosts, which dislocate and condense the interior world of the characters of the antunian fictional constellation.
