A Democracia na Imprensa Popular Portuguesa: O caso dos jornais diários Correio da Manhã e Jornal de Notícias

Abstract

The present study investigates how democracy is included in a specific media discourse: the popular press. The study describes a People's perspective represented through a dominant discourse that is centred on a commercial press operating within media oligopolies. The analysis focused on the Portuguese context, and it used the newspapers Correio da Manhã and Jornal de Notícias as empirical material sources. To enable the emergence of different discourses the material was collected using two different approaches: a time-based approach focused on the year 2011, and a thematic approach in which topics relevant for the Portuguese democracy in the early twentieth-first century were selected. Consequently, the studies themes were: the referendum on the voluntary interruption of pregnancy (2007); the parliament vote approving same-sex marriage (2010); both the presidential and the legislative elections (2011), and the demonstration "To hell with troika, we want our lives!" (2012). The empirical material was subjected to a content analysis to identify the actors, discourses, parties, and topics which occurred more often in the newspapers. In addition, the discourses about democracy reproduced in these media were critically evaluated. The analysis revealed that the most common perspective is the representative liberal view, and that the newspapers direct their focus to the centre of the political power, marginalizing counter-hegemonic perceptions of democracy.
