Abstract

Pregnant women and love partners’ perceived mother rejection and generativity According with parental Acceptance-Rejection Theory (PARTheory) and their implications on personal development, and considering the generativity construct, which integrates previous psychosocial development, this research aims to explore the relationship between perceived mother rejection, generativity level, and pregnancy involvement of woman and their love partners on this process. To accomplish this goal, it were used the following instruments: Adult PARQ (short form) – Parental Acceptance-Rejection Questionnaire – Mother (Rohner, 2004) – Portuguese adaptation of Franco-Borges & Vaz-Rebelo, 2010); Loyola Generativity Scale –LGS (McAdams & de St. Aubin, 1992) –Portuguese adaptation of Franco–Borges & Vaz–Rebelo (2007). Additionally, it was created and applied a Pregnancy Questionnaire (men and women version) Through a sample of 79 women and 21 men, with ages between the 18.6 and 43.6 years old, we collected the data in a health centre of Coimbra and in a hospital near from Porto (Portugal). The results consistently showed a negative association between perceived mother rejection and generativity level, indicating the importance of that perception to generativity development during adulthood. On the other hand, the generativity level was associated with positive pregnancy involvement. The data also shows that either pregnancy involvement is a predictor of generativity level, as this one is a predictor of the former. Although men were underrepresented (21%), the results indicate that they tend to perceive more mother rejection than women do, which highlights the importance of exploring this differentiation on parenthood experience and involvement in near studies.
