Abstract

A cidade de Benguela, centro de cultura e concentração de recursos económicos, demográficos, tecnocientíficos, entre outros, é também centro de grandes frustrações e tenções humanas, consequência do processo histórico-geográfico da assimilação dos seus diferentes espaços. Neste sentido, é importante desenvolver investigações sobre as relações, por vezes complexas, entre o homem e o ambiente urbano ou outras zonas que o rodeiam, em especial, aqueles bairros com condições críticas de saúde, alimentação, energia, contaminação. Estas investigações podem constituir um ponto de partida para procurar soluções viáveis por parte dos governos locais. O presente trabalho é fruto de uma pesquisa científica sobre avaliação dos níveis de poluiçãona cidade de Benguela, com fins de prevenir as consequências ou efeitos sobre o meio, e que hoje se percebe como factor de risco para o futuro da humanidade, isto é, mediante um estudo exploratório com vista a uma contribuição com teóricos e práticos acerca das políticas de gestão e protecção do meio de acordo a realidade da província e do país. Na elaboração deste trabalho, foi definido como objectivo principal caracterizar os níveis de poluição por partículas na cidade de Benguela e como objectivos específicos: 1) caracterizar as partículas de poeiras através das suas propriedades magnéticas (susceptibilidade magnética; magnetização remanescente isotérmica, MRI, e parâmetros S) na cidade de Benguela, a partir da selecção de locais representativos; 2) avaliar e comparar os níveis de poluição por partículas em relação as épocas seca e chuvosa; 3) diagnosticar os níveis de poluição por partículas e relacioná-los, se possível, com a qualidade de vida e saúde das populações.

The city of Benguela, a cultural center and where economic, demographic and technical-scientific resources are concentratedis also a place of frustration and social tension, a consequence of the historical-geographic processes of assimilation of its different spaces. In this sense, it is important to study the relations, often complex, between man, the urban environment and its surroundings and in particular, the neighborhoods with critical health, food, energy supply and contamination. The research can serve as a stepping stone towards a search for viable solutions by the local authorities. The present work is a result of the scientific research on the evaluation of pollution levels in the city of Benguela aiming to prevent the consequences - or affects - over the environment. Such affects, which are known to be a risk factor to the future of mankind were evaluated through an exploratory study aiming to contribute theoretically and practically to the management policies and protection of the environment in agreement with the reality of the province and country. In the preparation of this work, it was established as a main objective to characterize the levels of pollution by particles from the city of Benguela and as specific objectives: 1) Characterize the dust particles through its magnetic properties (magnetic susceptibility) in the city of Benguela, from the selection of representative locations; 2) Evaluate and compare the levels of pollution by particles in the different seasons; 3) Assess the pollution levels by particles and relate them, if possible, with the quality of life and health of the population.
