Abstract

Este estudo tem como objecto de análise um resíduo produzido na fábrica de pasta de papel Celbi, que é habitualmente designado de dregs. Neste âmbito, os principais objectivos desta dissertação, são o levantamento das suas propriedades físicas e químicas, bem como das potenciais vias de valorizações, de modo a evitar a sua deposição em aterro. O resíduo em estudo resulta da recuperação de químicos no processo de pasta de papel Kraft e tem uma natureza sobretudo inorgânica. Apesar de os objectivos a atingir terem por base a pesquisa bibliográfica, o trabalho também envolveu a análise de amostras recolhidas na Celbi. Assim, foi possível determinar que os dregs apresentam 37 % de humidade e 3,75 % de perda ao fogo. A condutividade eléctrica e os sólidos dissolvidos totais (TDS), medidos numa suspensão com uma razão líquido/sólido igual a 10 L/kg, foi de 6,2 mS/cm e 4,48 g/L, respectivamente. O material apresenta uma massa volúmica real entre 2,65 e 2,87 % e uma massa específica bulk de cerca de 0,94 g/cm3 para o resíduo tal qual e 0,86 g/cm3 para o resíduo previamente seco. A distribuição granulométrica dos dregs, determinada através de peneiração, mostrou que é um material constituído por partículas bastante finas. Os dregs apresentam um pH altamente alcalino (cerca de 11,1), sendo caracterizados por valores de neutralização de 34 a 40 %, e valores de reactividade de 33 a 39 %, apresentando assim um forte poder de neutralização. Quimicamente os dregs são constituídos maioritariamente por Ca, Na e Mg e apresentam um bom potencial de biodisponibilidade e mobilidade de nutrientes para o solo. Por outro lado, este resíduo liberta para o ambiente, quantidades mínimas de metais pesados. Com base na difracção de raio-X (XRD), espectroscopia de infravermelho com transformada de Fourier (FTIR) e análise termogravimétrica (TGA), as fases mais significativas são a calcite, pirssonite, barentsite e carbonato de cálcio e magnésio. As propriedades dos dregs permitem a sua classificação como um material não perigoso, sendo possível a sua reutilização em várias vertentes. Contudo, com base na revisão da literatura foi identificada como via mais favorável a sua utilização como agente neutralizante de solos.

Abstract This study is aimed at examining a residue produced in the pulp mill Celbi, which is commonly referred to as dregs. In this context, the main objectives of this thesis are a survey of its physical and chemical properties as well as the eventual ways of valorizing it in order to avoid its landfilling. The analyzed residue results from the recovery of chemicals in the pulp Kraft process and has a mainly inorganic nature. Although the objectives to be achieved are based on bibliographic research, the work has also involved the analysis of samples collected at Celbi. Thus it was possible to determine that the dregs present 37 % of moisture and 3.75 % loss on ignition. The electrical conductivity and total dissolved solids (TDS), measured in a suspension with a liquid/solid ratio equal to 10 L/kg, was of 6.2 mS/cm and 4.48 g/L, respectively. The material has a real density between 2.65 and 2.87 % and a bulk density of about 0.94 g/cm3 to the residue as such and 0.86 g/cm3 to the previously dried residue. The particle size distribution of dregs determined by sieving, showed that it is a material composed of very fine particles. The dregs have a highly alkaline pH (around 11.1), and are characterized by neutralizing values of 34 to 40 %, reactivity values of 33 to 39 %, thus showing a strong power of neutralization. Chemically, the dregs are composed mainly of Ca, Na and Mg and have good potential bioavailability and mobility of nutrients into the soil. Moreover, this residue can release for eventually, minor amounts of heavy metals to the environment. Based on X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), the stage most significant are calcite, pirssonite, barentsite and calcium and magnesium carbonate. The properties of the dregs allow its classification as a non-hazardous material, thus making possible to reuse it in manners. However, based on the revision of the literature, its use as a soil neutralizing agent has been identified as the most favorable via.
