Abstract

A síndrome do Coração de Atleta compreende um conjunto de alterações clínicas, electrocardiográficas e ecocardiográficas, tais como a bradicardia sinusal, a hipertrofia miocárdica ou o alargamento das cavidades cardíacas. Estas alterações são secundárias à prática regular e prolongada de exercício físico e traduzem a adaptação do sistema cardiovascular às modificações metabólicas e hemodinâmicas induzidas pelo esforço. A prática de desporto tem evidentes benefícios ao nível do sistema cardiovascular e, consequentemente, no bem-estar do indivíduo. No entanto, na presença de patologia cardíaca, a prática de exercício pode estar contra-indicada por se associar a um risco aumentado de morte súbita. Assim, torna-se importante distinguir as alterações patológicas potencialmente fatais das adaptações fisiológicas normais e sem risco para o atleta, procurando, desta forma, não privar desnecessariamente o indivíduo dos benefícios da prática desportiva. Pretendeu-se com este trabalho rever bibliografia sobre o tema “Coração de Atleta”, focando os seguintes pontos: as alterações fisiológicas mais comuns no atleta e os mecanismos que a elas conduzem; as causas mais frequentes de morte súbita no atleta, dando particular atenção à miocardiopatia hipertrófica e, finalmente, os mecanismos adoptados pela American Heart Association e pela European Society of Cardiology para prevenir a morte súbita durante a prática desportiva.
