Abstract

A diabetes mellitus é uma das doenças não transmissíveis mais comuns e a sua proporção epidémica colocou-a na linha da frente dos desafios actualmente colocados à saúde pública. De facto, a diabetes mellitus é uma preocupação prioritária devido às diferentes complicações severas associadas a ela. Neste sentido, atingir um nível glicémico normal é um dos principais objectivos actuais. Muita investigação tem sido dedicada por diferentes grupos nesta área particular. Enquanto muitos estudos são consensuais em considerar que a educação do paciente é primordial neste contexto, um número muito elevado de novos fármacos antidiabéticos têm sido desenvolvidos nas últimas décadas. É, no entanto, também consensual que atingir este controlo glicémico apertado origina muito frequentemente um ciclo vicioso de episódios hipoglicémicos recorrentes. As consequências mais graves da hipoglicemia são as que se fazem sentir ao nível do cérebro, incluindo perda de funções cognitivas, coma e até morte. Assim, o conhecimento dos potenciais hipoglicémicos relativos dos diferentes fármacos antidiabéticos, dentro de um contexto individual e multifactorial que caracteriza a doença, é de importância extrema.
