Os diversos problemas ligados ao álcool, nas áreas do funcionamento social dos indivíduos alcoólicos, são sobejamente conhecidos e abordados por diversos autores, como indício de sérias dificuldades na sua adaptação social. O objectivo deste estudo foi investigar a relação entre a (in)existência de tratamentos anteriores e este nível de adaptação. A nossa hipótese era de que, os indivíduos que tinham passado por um ou mais tratamentos possuíam um nível de ajustamento social mais elevado em relação aos que se encontravam em primeiro tratamento. Para atingir esse objectivo, utilizámos uma amostra de 50 sujeitos pertencentes a ambos estes grupos. Os resultados confirmaram a nossa hipótese. De acordo com eles, uma das implicações deste estudo é que, o tratamento do alcoolismo, em qualquer instituição onde tenha lugar, será mais completo se aspirar, não apenas ao tratamento da dependência, mas também à recuperação de um funcionamento social saudável.

The several problems related to alcohol, in the social functioning of alcoholic individuals, are widely known and mentioned by many authors as a symptom of serious difficulties in their social adaptation. This study aims to investigate the relationship between the (in)existence of previous treatments and this kind of adjustment. Our hypothesis was that the individuals who had already be treated, at least one time, had a higher level of social adjustment, when compared to those who were at their first treatment. To achieve this goal, we used a sample of 50 subjects from both of these groups. The results confirmed our hypothesis. According to them, one of the implications of this study is that, the treatment of alcoholism, wherever it takes place, will be more complete if it aspires, not only to the treatment of the dependence, but also to the recovering of an healthy social functioning.
