Abstract

Over the last 40 years, in situ chemical improvement or stabilization of soils with binder materials (deep mixing) has been successfully applied to a large range of soils, namely soft soils. The existence of such kind of deposit near Coimbra supported the decision of studying the potential of this improvement technique. A research project was established in order to characterize the mechanical behaviour of the stabilized soil, in complement to performing a geotechnical characterization of the natural soil (unstabilized). To accomplish these goals, extensive field and laboratory experiments were carried out. The overall behaviour of the natural soil is mainly determined by its organic nature, high moisture content and sandy-silt fractions. The significant presence of silica and alumina oxides in the chemical composition must also be highlighted. These characteristics have a major influence on the stabilization. The laboratorial study proves that the mixture that maximizes the technical-economical-environmental trade-offs consists of Portland cement type I 42,5 R and granulated blast furnace slag combined in a dry weight proportion 75/25, applied in a dosage between 150 and 175kg/m3. No water should be added, meaning that the dry variant deep mixing technique should be used. . The mechanical behaviour of the stabilized material was characterized through laboratorial experiments. The results allowed concluding that the behaviour is mainly governed by the binding connections between the solid particles, which are responsible for the significant increase in strength and stiffness when compared with the unstabilized material. Overall, it can be said that the application of the deep mixing stabilization technique to the soft soils deposit of Baixo Mondego produces a new material, with improved mechanical behaviour, whose advantages must be exploited.
