Perturbação específica do desenvolvimento da linguagem: caracterização neuropsicológica

Abstract

Specific Language Impairment (SLI) is a diagnostic entity in which language is expected to be the only affected cognitive function. However, it is possible to find difficulties in other cognitive functions, as attention, visual and verbal memory, executive functions and perception, either because the linguistic impairment is the expression of a base difficulty or because the linguistic difficulties direct to cognitive deficits. The present study objectives are the analysis of the Coimbra’s Neuropsychological Assessment Battery (Bateria de Avaliação Neuropsicológica de Coimbra - BANC) validity and to determine the SLI neuropsychological characteristics in a group of 28 children with SLI, as for the visual and verbal memory and attention/executive and visual functions, with resource to some tests of the battery. The characterization is carried through by the comparison of the results gotten in children with SLI with the ones of a control group, of also 28 children, selected from the normative sample of the BANC. Both the groups are equalized in terms of age, gender, school grade and socioeconomic level. In general, the results obtained differentiate the performances of children with SDLD (clinical group) from the observed in children without SLI (control group), what it is in agreement of published inquiries that show the clinical utility of the BANC. In concrete, comparatively to the control group, the group of SLI presented significantly inferior results in visual and verbal memory, selective and sustained attention, executive functions, verbal semantics fluency, visual perceptive functions and speed of processing.
