Abstract

The goal of this research is to assess the impact of parental acceptance versus rejection and of social support’s perceptions on pre-adolescents’ personal and academic adjustment. The sample includes 153 subjects (87 males and 66 females) attending the 5th and 6th year in a secondary school (with 2nd and 3rd cycle) of S. João da Madeira. We used five scales adapted to Portuguese version for the first time: As Pessoas da Minha Vida - PMV (Portuguese adaptation of Social Support Scale for Children, Harter, 1985); Questionário de Avaliação da Personalidade – QAP (Portuguese adaptation of Child PAQ, Rohner, 2004); Percepção da Atitude do Pai – PAP and Percepção da Atitude da Mãe – PAM (Portuguese adaptations of Child PARQ: Mother and Child PARQ: Father – short forms, Rohner, 2004); Avaliação da Conduta do/a Aluno/a – ACA (Portuguese adaptation of TESC, Rohner, 2008). The analysis of the results showed that parental acceptance and extra-familiar social support perceptions are positively associated with pre-adolescents’ psychological and academic adjustment, pointing out to the relevancy of contextual affordance
