Abstract

This exploratory study had the purpose of analyzing the hypothetical relationship between the student behavior in the school environment (through the teacher perception) and both parental acceptance/rejection perception and psychological adjustment. Moreover, it was analyzed the relationship between the parental acceptance/rejection and the psychological maladjustment. We collected data from 81 preadolescents aged from nine to thirteen years old, using the follow instruments: the Child-PARQ-Father and the Child-PARQ-Mother (Rohner, 2004; Portuguese versions - Franco-Borges & Vaz-Rebelo, 2009a,b), to assess the parental acceptance/rejection perception (father and mother); the Child-PAQ (Rohner, 2004; Portuguese version - Franco-Borges & Vaz-Rebelo, 2009c), to assess some personality dimensions perception; the TESC (Rohner, 2004; Portuguese version - Franco-Borges & Vaz-Rebelo, 2009d), to assess the student disruptive behaviour (teacher perception). The data supported the hypothetical relationship between the student behavior in the school environment (teacher perception) and both mother rejection and psychological maladjustment. However, the father rejection was not associated with the student behavior. The hypothetical associations between both father and mother rejection and the psychological maladjustment were confirmed, with the father rejection revealing a greater impact than the mother rejection, according to the previous research (Veneziano & Rohner, 1998; Rohner et al., 2005).
