Abstract

This report is the result of a curricular internship for the Master's Degree inEducation Sciences at the Faculty of Psychology and Education Sciences of theUniversity of Coimbra, carried out at the Sports and Leisure Centre of the University ofAveiro over a period of nine months (960 hours). The internship focused on analysing therole of university sport as a tool for personal, academic and social development, highlighting the challenges and potential experienced by student-athletes.The report is structured into three main chapters: a theoretical framework on theevolution of university sport in Portugal and worldwide; a description of the hostinstitution and the activities carried out; and, finally, an exploratory study that sought tounderstand the impact of sport on higher education, based on the testimonies of studentsat the University of Aveiro. The results showed significant benefits associated with sports practice, particularly in terms of health, psychological well-being, socialisation and thedevelopment of transversal skills. However, limitations were also identified, such as thedifficulty in reconciling practice with academic demands, the lack of financial andlogistical support, and the reduced institutional value placed on sporting achievements. It can be concluded that university sports, when promoted in a structured andinclusive manner, constitute a fundamental pillar in the comprehensive education ofstudents, enhancing both academic success and preparation for personal, social andprofessional life. This report thus reinforces the need for more consistent institutionalpolicies and strategies that balance the demands of academic life with the benefits ofsports, consolidating sports as an integral part of the university experience.
