Abstract

As a result of the work developed within the scope of the internship that took place at Sintagma Traduções, this report will address the translation of verbal humor and the challenges it poses in the context of Audiovisual Translation, through the analysis of the first two episodes of the twelfth season of the sitcom “Two and a Half Man”. For a start, I will describe the company where the internship took place regarding its workplace environment, the work developed during the internship and the work tools I had access to. Following this description, Audiovisual Translation will be addressed from a theoretical perspective, analyzing the field’s history, its most recent theories and the technical parameters it is subjected to. Afterwards, the contextualizing theories regarding the phenomenon of humor and the translation of verbal humor will be presented, and based on them, a “typology” of humor will be proposed. After a brief introduction to the TV show “Two and a Half Man”, I will present eleven examples of verbal humor found during the translation and subtitling of each episode. In every example, the utterance present in the source language (English) will be analyzed regarding its context in the episode, the existence of verbal and extra verbal humor, and the relationship between the verbal text and the visual and auditive modes, as well as cultural signs. From this analysis, I will propose a translation hypothesis and reflect on how well this hypothesis transmits humor in the target language (Portuguese).

Two and a Half Man).
