Abstract

Mammography is inevitably linked to "Women's Health" issues, which in turn lead us to the concerning incidence and mortality rate numbers caused by breast cancer throughout the world. Given this reality, it is important to consider the pace with which new technologies associated to mammography are introduced on the market, by assessing their impact. Identifying the health care providers’ knowledge level and motivation to bridge the gap towards digital mammography, as well as women’s position and demands regarding mammography services represent an ambitious study with practical applicability. Information asymmetry between women and their physician’s characterizes the mammography market. A woman with a higher level of education has more knowledge on concepts related to mammography. A future completely based on digital mammography systems does not seem viable for all providers in Portugal.
