Benefícios e/ ou Contradições da Proteína na Hipertrofia Muscular

Abstract

The supplement market has grown exponentially over the years, mainly due to the easy accessibility of its products and their increasing popularity. Several studies highlight the importance of protein consumption, which is considered the most essential macronutrient for muscle mass gain when associated with strength training. One strategy that can enhance these results is dietary supplementation, specifically protein powder. However, uncertainties about its safety persist, especially in cases of indiscriminate use. Therefore, the objective was to analyze both the benefits and potential drawbacks of this supplement. We conducted a detailed study based on the most recent and comprehensive research on the topic, and through a literature review, we assessed whether the use of protein supplements is recommended for the general population. We began the review with a detailed analysis of both animal and plant-based proteins, considering their amino acid profiles and, in particular, leucine levels, concluding that whey protein showed significantly higher levels. We compared both and reported the adverse effects of overuse. Specifically, we investigated whether indiscriminate use could cause kidney and liver damage, alterations in gut microbiota, and the risk of osteoporosis. Finally, we determined whether protein supplementation is absolutely necessary for muscle mass gains. We found that protein powder can be an excellent tool, supported by studies and articles that prove its benefits when used in moderation; however, it does not replace a balanced diet.
