Marble as a stage - a way as art towards art

Abstract

The result of marble extraction in the Estremoz’ Anticline has been a series of fills and voids that interrupt the typical Alentejo plateau. The emergence of quarries and rubble heaps gradually became a factor in the identity of this area, which was reinforced by the involvement of the local population. The work is being carried out on a territorial scale that seeks to unite the different communities of the Estremoz’ Anticline, with the aim of enhancing the intentions presented and, at the same time, preceding and preparing the formulation of a proposal for a cultural programme. The following proposal takes place on an inactive underground quarry in the Estremoz’ Anticline. Preserving its own identity and following sustainable ideals, it appropriates an existing structure that is found, currently, without a purpose.Exploring the concept of the excavated, light and depth are worked on in a sequence of moments until the great void where, contrary to local problems, the preparation of a space capable of unfolding in multiple configurations transposing the limits of architecture through multidisciplinarity emerges as the answer. The result of marble extraction in the Estremoz’ Anticline has been a series of fills and voids that interrupt the typical Alentejo plateau.
