Designing Contextual Personal Information Spaces

Designing Contextual Personal Information Spaces

Abstract

With the fast-paced developments in the technological landscape, people have become more dependent on technological artefacts for personal information management (PIM). People use an ecology of devices to create, store, share and access their personal information, which leads to a fragmentation of self (e.g. across different platforms). This study aims to design a way of addressing this PIM challenge by going through the literature on the topic and study related practices, by analysing and innovating current approaches to the concept of Personal Information Spaces. Analysis of both the literature review, and the use practices of platforms where users spread their personal data, showed that such a personal information space should be malleable, to dynamically grow with the user’s intentions, but also allow for everyday co-creation relations involving different parties, from the diverse facets of an individual’s life. Furthermore, it showed the importance of considering aspects such as the ones related to the challenges of developing a human-centred information space; the relationship of different cultures to time, context, meanings and territoriality when dealing with shared information, the opportunities generated and the information management problems that can surface when sharing personal information spaces. One of the main innovations attempts to rip the benefits of developing this project alongside the users, as a participatory design proposal to be explored and developed within a cooperating environment. Considering the previous writings, the way we opted to solve this problem of fragmentation of personal information across different applications, is by co-designing a common shared space that enables people to access, add, and edit personal information from the different contexts of life, within a unique environment across all devices, their Contextual Personal Information Space, where they can share and collaborate within social groups, including people from different facets of life, and organise their information in shared activity contexts and in relation to each other.
