Abstract

As part of the master's degree in legal medicine and forensic sciences and with the aim of granting the master's degree, the curricular internship was developed at the Forensic Anthropology Laboratory (LAF) of the University of Coimbra located in the Department of Life Sciences. The purpose of the internship is aimed at learning and developing knowledge and techniques taught during the student's academic training in order to provide a practical view of them. The daily life of a forensic anthropologist was the theme worked on throughout the five months of the internship, and the work carried out focused on the different osteological collections housed in the laboratory in the Collection of Identified Skeletons 21st Century, Collection of Unidentified Skeletons from the Capuchos Cemeteries and the Collection of Burnt Skeletons CEI/XXI #.In this broad sample it was possible to apply techniques and methods that constitute the basis of Forensic Anthropology as a forensic science applied in the field of Legal Medicine. Throughout the internship, different themes were developed that will be addressed throughout the Dissertation, such as Osteology, Biological Profile and Individualizing Factors, Traumas, Prostheses and Medical Devices, Comparative Anatomy, Preservation of Osteological Collections and inter-observer error. A more intense study was also carried out on the Collection of Unidentified Skeletons, which led to the preparation of the Article: “Prostheses and Medical Devices in the Collection of Unidentified Skeletons.
