Uma Sardinha para Cinco

Abstract

One Sardine for Five is a novel-diary/epistolary novel project, divided into two parts, about the Branquinho family, a low-income family from the village of Eirol, in Aveiro, who are faced with the hospitalisation of the head of the family. Throughout the story, the reader is confronted with the sorrows and joys of the members of this family. Diary writing was chosen as a literary resource for the novel, in order to complement the real letters that inspired the project and to show, in the first person, the feelings and thoughts of the various characters.Eugénio is a man in love with his wife, children and life, who enjoys reading and writing, especially poetry. However, he hasn't had much opportunity to study or deepen his knowledge of the Portuguese language, a fact that is demonstrated by the large number of spelling mistakes and the scant use of punctuation, particularly commas. He is cheerful, hard-working and does everything for his family, which ends up killing him, albeit indirectly.Francelina is a suffering woman, burdened by life. She was born into a family with limited means, which forced her to go to work at an early age. Despite this, she is a very intelligent and progressive woman who feels that life is much more than what she has access to. She encourages her children to learn and deal with their feelings, so that they grow up a little differently from her. She is a woman of affection and does everything for her family.Maria dos Anjos is a nine-year-old girl who is quite mature and grown up for her age; she's a girl-woman who helps her mum with all the household chores, including looking after her younger siblings. She's a very good student, especially in Portuguese.Manuel is eleven and the quietest of the brothers. He feels and suffers his father's absence in silence, because he thinks that's how a man should behave. He is the one most affected by his father's illness, seeing him as a great example of a family leader. He likes to be alone with his thoughts. He doesn't like school very much.Fernando is a mischievous six-year-old. He likes to play tricks and joke around, he's smiley. He doesn't like to sit still, which makes school very challenging. Despite this, he's very clever and usually gets what he wants. He loves his little sister Rosita and misses his father's joy.Just like the stories I used to create as a child, I write about what I know, about the people and places around me. I like what is banal, simple and familiar. This project couldn't be any other way.
