Abstract

Social Work is a professional area aimed at the intervention in situations of vulnerability. The profession itself can cover all the complex aspects of the client’s life, within the framework of a social perspective that is in the competences of the social worker. Specifically, the professional worker faces situations of domestic violence, sexual abuse, child abuse, vulnerable elderly people, drug addiction, housing, assistance in legal cases, assistance in vulnerable cases of mental health, assists cases of financial vulnerability amongst others. Considering the potential shocks with traumatic content that professionals in this area are susceptible, the study aimed to verify the presence of vicarious trauma, as well as vicarious resilience in social workers from Terceira Island, discussing such concepts and the specificities of the profession. For this purpose, 36 social workers from the region were interviewed (91.7% female and 8.3% male). The questionnaire used in the interviews included questions about sociodemographic characteristics, potentially traumatic experiences and the following psychometric scales: Brief Symptom Inventory (BSI), PTSD Checklist – 5 (PCL-5) and Resilience Scale for Adults (RSA). The scale results showed low levels of psychopathological symptoms and high levels of resilience. The interviews also corroborated the data acquired from the scales, pointing to the absence of signs of vicarious trauma and characteristics that indicate the presence of vicarious resilience. Awareness of the vulnerability of the assisted population and the potential traumas to which it is exposed proved to be a key element, providing them with emotional intelligence to deal with challenging situations.
