Instrumentos Cirúrgicos Romanos na Quinta de Crestelos (Meirinhos-Mogadouro)

Abstract

On the scope of Baixo Sabor dam construction, systematic archaeological interventions took place in Quinta de Creste- los site located in Merinhos parish (Mogadouro-Bragança). Excavation works allowed us to register several contexts, structures and safeguard materials from this very important site which has been occupied since Pre-history to present days. To be emphasized the intensive occupation during the Second Iron Age and the site’s Romanization, where a farm or a grange seems to have been settled and whose economic base would have been agriculture and cattle raising. Amongst the archaeological findings, there is a set of Roman chirurgical instruments to be highlighted. These were ex- humed in unusual and still not clear contexts, and their handling could only have justified with the need for permanent medical assistance. The study of some of these chirurgical precision tools, selected from clear contexts, may give us some clues that will shed some light on the scenarios and outlines the context under which they were used.
