Correlatos Psicológicos do Comportamento Alimentar Perturbado no Sexo Masculino

Abstract

Introduction: Despite being less recognized and studied in males, eating disorders have been increasingly prevalent in this group. It is important that research includes not only women, and for this, validated instruments are necessary. Objective: 1. To analyze the psychometric properties of the Portuguese versions of the Screen for Disordered Eating (SDE), Eating Disorder Examination – Questionnaire (EDE-Q7), Muscle Dysmorphia sub-scale of the Eating Disorder Assessment for Men (DM-EDAM), and the preliminary version of the Body Image Concern Inventory (BICI) in a sample of men from the general population; 2. To compare levels of eating disorder pathology in men under 30 years old vs. 30 or older, and with vs. without a history of psychiatric pathology throughout their life/PPTL; 3. To analyze the role of perfectionism, concerns with body image, and negative affect in levels of eating disorder psychopathology in men.Materials and Methods: 227 men from the general population, with a mean age of 30.41 years (±13.96; range: 14-73), filled out an online survey that included, in addition to the already mentioned instruments, the BIG-3 Perfectionism Scale/BTPS-16 and the Profile of Mood States/PoMS-12.Results: Confirmatory factor analysis of SDE, EDE-Q7, DM-EDAM, and BICI showed good construct validity; global Cronbach's alpha coefficients were .621; .857; .891; and >.900, respectively. All scales presented significant and positive correlations with each other, except for SDE and DM-EDAM. BICI and DM-EDAM mean scores and the Weight and Shape Overvaluation/WSOV sub-scale of the EDE-Q7 were significantly higher in men under 30 years old. Men with vs. without PPTL had significantly higher scores on BICI and EDE-Q7 (except for the Restrictive Diet subscale). Perfectionism and Negative Affect were significantly and positively correlated with all variables related to eating disorder psychopathology. In mediation analyses, Muscle Dysmorphia fully mediated the relationship between perfectionism and eating disorder psychopathology, except for the WSOV dimension, where mediation was partial. All models had a significant total effect, except in predicting DM-EDAM.Conclusion: Men under 30 years old demonstrated greater overvaluation of body image. Concerns with body image were highlighted as a predictor of how perfectionism influences levels of eating disorder psychopathology. As Muscle Dysmorphia and Weight and Shape Overvaluation are potentially modifiable, particularly through mindfulness and self-compassion-based strategies, investing in such interventions is important.
