A influência do microbioma no envelhecimento

Abstract

Aging is a physiological process inherent to all human beings and, with advancing age, several comorbidities arise that limit the quality of life of the individual as well as their longevity. The technological development, particularly of next-generation sequencing techniques, has allowed the study of the human microbiome and, as a result of this knowledge, it has been observed that there is a relationship between changes in the human microbiome (dysbiosis) and changes intrinsic to the aging process. Furthermore, several studies have shown that, by manipulating the microbiota, it is possible to modulate the mechanisms underlying age-related diseases through changes in lifestyle, including diet, the use of pre- and probiotics, minimizing their impact on the quality of life of the individual. This study aims to analyze and review the literature about the influence of the microbiome in aging, including describing the microorganisms associated with favorable and unfavorable changes, throughout aging, and the impact on host health status. It is intended to achieve a reference base for consultation, enabling knowledge in the future of individualized therapeutic measures, not only in pathological processes, but also in the promotion of health and quality of life throughout aging.
