Abstract

The undue inflows has gained importance over time, given the complications that their presence can bring to drainage systems. Once these parasitic flows increase significantly the volumes affluent to wastewater treatment plants, the complications for management entities increase, both financially and in terms of the sustainability of their assets. The problem of undue inflows is difficult to deal with, given the different possibilities of appearing in drainage infrastructures. Changes in the structural condition, whether due to lack of care during the construction phase or due to the aging of the network, are a pretext for the entry of this type of flow into the drainage infrastructure. It is up to the management entities of this type of asset to find solutions to overcome this problem, using the available information. The rigorous and careful dimensioning of the drainage networks, as well as the typology, materials and other characteristics of the system are the basis for its proper functioning and possible disappearance of this parcel. In the present dissertation, the origins and causes that potentiate the occurrence of undue inflows are mentioned, in addition, the methods of quantification of parasitic flows are explained. The triangle method was used and the moving minimum method were applied to four drainage networks in the municipality of Coimbra, supervised by the company Águas de Coimbra – Empresa Municipal. The aim was to characterize the problem in these networks, quantifying the affluent volume, as well as the economic and financial impact of the delivery of parasitic flows to the WWTPs and subsequent treatment of these volumes of undue inflows in the respective WWTPs. This analysis is carried out considering the three-month period of the year 2022 and the influence of precipitation on the networks.
