Caracterização de gasolinas por HRAM LC-MS

Abstract

Most flammable liquids are petrochemical products derived from crude oil and, within these, gasoline is the most commonly used flammable in fire crimes, an increasingly common reality . Nowadays, the performance of fuels results in part from the addition of small amounts of chemicals (< 1 %), known as additives . As additivation is a brand-dependent process, it gives brands a distinctive characteristic . Fires constitute complex crime scenes and, in this sense, all the information acquired is useful. The identification of additives provides a new parameter for identifying and comparing samples, as well as for establishing relationships between arson, gas stations and suspects . In this study, HRAM LC-MS was used to analyze fifteen different brands of gasoline, collected from twenty-six petrol stations in Portugal . Chemometric methods from Compound Discoverer software, including descriptive analysis, PCA, HCA and differential analysis (ANOVA), were applied in order to identify compounds that are characteristic of gasolines, as well as compounds that differentiate them . Previous studies have already demonstrated the viability of brand differentiation . The characterization of the gasolines involved in this project made it possible to identify compounds found in a recurring and coherent way in the gasolines studied, as well as to identify differentiating compounds between two brands and to observe that the similarity, or difference, between samples can arise beyond the brand .
