Abstract

There are great expectations regarding the future of education for the next decades, on how to learn, how to teach and how to best prepare the youth for the future and needs of a different society. However, to educate and teach the focus must be on the learner. With this goal in mind, the intern teacher planned several classes concerning the 10th grade themes of “Volcanism” and “Matter production by autotroph organisms”. These activities took place in the in the 2022/2023 school year, during their pedagogical training at the D. Duarte Secondary School, as part of the Master’s in Teaching of Biology and Geology in the 3rd cycle of Basic Education and in Secondary Education. Attending to the context and needs of each class and the contents to be taught, not only the strategies and resources, but the assessment criteria were adapted to stimulate cognitive involvement while simultaneously guarantying every student was part of the teaching learning process. Some of these strategies included information segmentation and the involvement of students in the class, as well as a “hot spot” model in Geology, analogies that all students could relate to, an activity about an atypical case of photosynthesis in the Amazon and the use of synthesis tables to help students get a holistic understanding of the photosynthetic process. Students were evaluated by a pre-test and a post-test, before and after the supervised classes, respectively. They were also evaluated by the information the teacher gathered during the classes, including but not limited to activities and “Gowin’s Vee” diagrams. The instruments’ results were used according to their purpose, either for formative or summative evaluation. The results revealed the positive impact the intern teacher’s lessons had, as seen on the post-test’s improved results and the progress of the students’ understanding of the themes.
