Ajustamento ao Divórcio: Funcionamento Familiar, Coparentalidade e Responsabilidades Parentais

Abstract

Theoretical framework: Marital breakdown is a complex experience that is increasingly present, affecting and demanding an adjustment from individuals and families. Adaptation to divorce/separation can be influenced by an important factor, the coparental relationship between the ex-spouses. Objectives: analysis of the mediating role of coparenting in the relationship between parental responsibilities and family adjustment to divorce; exploration of differences in sociodemographic and family variables, in adjustment to divorce, and in coparenting. Method: A quantitative study was carried out using a sample composed of 86 Portuguese fathers and mothers aged at least 25 years old, separated or divorced who had been married for at least one year. They would have to be parents of children, adolescents and/or young adults, children of the relationship that ended in separation/divorce. Respondents' data were collected through a protocol in online format, applying a Socio-Demographic Questionnaire of Family and Complementary Data, the DAI-R (Divorce Adjustment Inventory Revised) translated by Morais (2007) and the QC (Coparenting Questionnaire), version validated by Pedro and Ribeiro (2015). Results: we found a mediating effect of the dimension of cooperation (coparenting) in the relationship between parental responsibilities and adjustment to divorce. Some statistically significant differences were also observed in the comparison between groups in some sociodemographic and family variables in the adjustment to divorce and coparenting. Discussion and conclusions: The present investigation intends to contribute to the theme of adjustment to divorce and coparenting, useful in guiding clinical intervention. Being an exploratory study, it points out future lines of investigation.
