Megalitismo das Terras de Sicó. Arquiteturas e Materiais de Construção.

Abstract

This dissertation is an analysis of the megalithic phenomenon in the context of the so-called Terras de Sicó region, located in the central coastal area of Portugal. It is intended, through the available data, to define a precise set of megalithic funerary monuments, representative, as a whole, of the same megalithic group, establishing preferential areas of deployment and funerary practices adopted. The main point of this work is to approach the construction techniques used in this group of monuments, while defining the type of material used in the various constructions. An attempt is made to establish, depending on the materials used in the structures, possible areas of geological provenance of the material used, making reference to the proximity of rocky outcrops in the areas surrounding the monuments, as places with resources to obtain the necessary raw material. This study recognizes a set of ten megalithic monuments, scattered, according to administrative criteria, by the representative municipalities of this territory (Alvaiázere, Ansião, Penela, Pombal e Soure), of contemporary construction chronologies, from the Neocalcolithic, forming a group composed of several nuclei, usually two to three monuments, with funerary architectures that are characterized by their medium dimensions (between six and seven meters long) and evolved plans (chamber and midway corridor), which use, in their constructions, local raw material, the limestone, extracted about one to two kilometers away from the areas of deployment of the graves.
