Abstract

Introdução: O século XX foi marcado por um intenso e contínuo processo de migração de pessoas para as cidades, movidas pela expetativa de melhores condições de vida. Como resultado, mais de metade da população mundial atual vive em áreas urbanas, prevendo-se um aumento até aos 68% em 2050. Enquanto forma de organização social predominante, as cidades tornaram-se espaços de convergência cultural, de inovação e de novos empregos. Mas a expansão em dimensão, densidade e diversidade (Wirth, 2001) também acentuou fenómenos de exclusão social, evidenciando a falta de um planeamento adequado e as cidades como espaços de desigualdades sociais, económicas e ambientais (Amado, 2005; Schmidt, 2016).
