Abstract

During the last few years, we have seen an exponential increase in studies concerning fans. Despite the presence, in the literature, of a strong tradition to stereotype them as 'a group of crazy and hysterical girls', the efforts made by the academy to conceptualize the fan outside this orb have been notorious. Much ink has been spilled on this subject as the definition of fan continues to raise questions, and the concept of fandom keeps expanding. For that reason, in the present work, after a historical and comprehensive contextualization of the theme's origins, we dived into the particular, and we challenged ourselves to try to understand a specific type of media fandom: fans of music artists. Even though there is a large amount of literature on the phenomenon, little is known about the process of constructing a fan's identity. Our purpose here is to try to make explicit what is often left implicit when the subject is discussed. We aspire to contribute to the study and the collection of data on how the Portuguese adult population connects to music artists. Thus, combining the knowledge that exists about life satisfaction and attachment styles with what is known about the phenomenon of fandom, we sought in a study with 167 Portuguese individuals, to contribute to psychology with an integrated and extensive view of human functioning. We concluded through this investigation that fandom is simultaneously a social and a personal phenomenon, which is not fixed, although it is stable and represents something of the identity of those who are part of it. We also understood that it can play several roles in an individual's life, being an experience that can occur in anyone, at any time, and in any gender. Furthermore, it is a phenomenon that tends to be more intense in the digital generations and single individuals, when compared to married people and single people in a relationship. Keeping in mind that we are all fans of something, hence the fans end up representing a part of us, we realized that, by trying to understand them, we end up understanding ourselves slightly better.
