Abstract

The medicinal properties of the Coriolus versicolor mushroom have been known for ages, mainly in oriental countries, with several benefits described for the treatment of many diseases. Currently, there is a growing interest in this area in occidental countries, which requires a strong commitment from the scientific community to expand clinical trials and better understand the therapeutic properties of this medicinal mushroom. PSP (polysaccharopeptide) and PSK (polysaccharopeptide Krestin) are the best known and studied active compounds. Most scientific evidence reports immunostimulatory and antitumor properties, however, there are many other documented therapeutic effects, such as antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, antiviral, hepatoprotective, among others. For this reason, C. versicolor is a potential target for the development of new therapies to prevent and treat chronic diseases as diabetes or cancer, with the main objective of improving the life quality of patients. The main focus of the present monography is to describe the well documented therapeutic effects of the C. versicolor, in addition to its immunostimulatory effect. Emphasis is given to the active compounds and their associated activity, mentioning the mechanism of action, efficacy and safety aspects, based on experimental studies and clinical trials. .
