Abstract

In March 2020, the World Health Organization declared COVID-19 a worldwide pandemic. In this context, the present comparative study was carried out between elements of couples with and without chronic disease (n = 303; n = 905, respectively), whose sample, collected between April 2020 and March 2021, included 1208 participants with average age of 40.58 years old. Both groups were analyzed in terms of perceived threat of illness and emotional state – levels of depression, anxiety, stress and mental well-being. The perception of relational quality and its relationship with positive dyadic coping was also evaluated. The results suggest that people with chronic illness have higher levels of perception of illness duration, depression, anxiety, stress and positive dyadic coping than those without illnesses. The correlation between the positive dyadic coping and perceived relational quality proved to be strongly positive, regardless of whether or not there was a previous disease. Finally, according to the hierarchical regression model, the perception of emotional response was the factor with the highest predictive value of depression, anxiety, stress and mental well-being.This study had some limitations, such as a small sample size of chronically ill patients, men and people infected with COVID-19, as well as the fact that we work with the perception of chronic disease and not with a medical diagnosis. Thus, in order to clarify some of the findings, it would be important to carry out more studies in adverse non-normative contexts.Key-words: COVID-19 Pandemic; Chronic Disease; Perceived Relational Quality; Emotional Distress; Mental Well-being; Positive Dyadic Coping.
