This paper begins by recalling that the word History has two meanings: the past as lived by humans — not only the factual events but also beliefs, thoughts, feelings, material life, and private and public daily life; and knowledge of the past, namely, the ways by which historiography researches, reconstructs, explains, discusses and interprets it. The essay approaches History and Light in two different ways: 1) As historical knowledge, which by a gradual expansion of its fields of analysis and methodologies illuminates the forgotten past and corrects the distortions of memory — and thus, History is light of the past and light of the present; 2) As light in history (the past as lived), in ordinary people’s everyday’ s life. I shan’t be addressing the History of light as technique (of progress or innovations) nor the perception of light as a symbol but rather the relationship of humans with light through the use of objects that allowed them to fight against darkness. This is a line of inquiry — among many others —, which the discipline of History of Material Culture is pursuing nowadays.
