Abstract

Los cubiertos y otros objetos del menaje destinados a servir en la mesa forman parte, a su modo y escala, de lo que podemos llamar con propiedad historia social. Introducidos lentamente en las costumbres y modelos de urbanidad del mundo occidental, aún en el siglo XVII distaban de ocupar un sitio unánime en la mesa a la hora de comer y beber, pues en muchas ocasiones los comensales se servían de las manos para hacerlo. La literatura y el arte reflejaban a menudo en sus obras esta falta habitual de cubertería en la vida cotidiana. Sin embargo, cuando las piezas estaban realizadas en plata u otros materiales nobles, estas cumplían una función suntuaria y, en consecuencia, eran atesoradas más allá de su hipotética utilidad primaria. En tal sentido, aparecen relacionadas en los testamentos de la época, que muestran su circulación como partes de capitales y dotes aportados al matrimonio, legados, mandas piadosas y empeños de préstamos. Tomando como referentes los testamentos de Huelva en el siglo XVII, este artículo analiza el menaje doméstico que podemos encontrar en ellos y las formas más frecuentes de su uso y circulación.
