II. Campaña "ATLOR II", marzo 1973

Abstract

[EN] A study is made of the chemical variables: salinity, dissolved oxygen, pH, nitrate, nitrite and phosphate as well as temperature and density distribution in the northwest Africa upwelling zone from 17ºN to 23ºN and off the African coast up to 22ºW in the period from 1 to 24 March (1973). his chemical variable distribution is compared with that of the cruise "Sahara II" carried out in August (1971), finding an analogy between both of them in the lower levels. The most remarkable difference is found in the surface where the Tropical water appears displced Southward, out of the studied area, and the Canary current deviated Westward having now is limit at 22ºW as a consequence of an intense upwelling, mainly constituted by South Central Water. From nutrients salts and the other chemical parameters it can be inferred the presence of a great cyclonic gyral centred at 18ºN, 18ºW with a meandering boundary between the SACW (South Atlantic Central Water) and the NACW (North Atlntic Central Water). These meanders give rise to secondary upwellings of SACW at 21ºN, 20ºW and 21ºN, 18ºW as well as a sinking of NACW at 21ºN, 19ºW. Just at 22ºW a convergence line appears, caused by an intense sinking of Canary current water
