Abstract

This work was partially funded by the European Commission project CENSOR (contract 511071).We thank Jordi Corbera for the illustration of the holotype and Eduardo Obis for the photographs of the holotype, paratype and othermaterial. This study is a contribution from the Census of Marine Zooplankton (CMarZ), an ocean realm field project of the Census ofMarine Life (CoML). Authors contributed to the paper as follows: Enrique Isla secured funding for the work and did the survey; Maria Alguero did the analyses of the sediment traps as part of his Master Thesis, Verónica Fuentes, Josep-Maria Gili and Dhugal Lindsay did the formal description of the new species. All authors contributed to the writing of the manuscript

Amphinema gordini, a new species of pandeid anthomedusa, is described from one holotype and several paratypes found in perfect condition in deep-water (883 m depth) sediment trap samples recovered off northern Chile. The new Amphinema species is characterized by the presence of an apical chamber, prominent gonads located in the interradial position, and cellular strands located all along the radial canals from the ring canal to the top of the apical chamber, not always linking the radial canals to the exumbrella. The morphological features of the new species are compared with those of the 17 species of the genus Amphinema described in the literature
