Abstract

[EN] The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of maize hybrid, time of sowing and grain maturity at harvest on yield and quality of maize silage, in vitro digestibility and energy value, and the prediction of milk production by means of an estimative model. An experimental study was conducted in the Piedmont region (Italy), comparing three different sowing dates (March, April and May), two different maize hybrids (Cisko, an early FAO class 300, and Arma, a late FAO class 700) and two different stages of maturity at harvest (milk line (ML) «1/4 – 1/3» or «1/2 – 2/3»). Arma 700 yielded 40% more silage than Cisko 300 hybrid. All factors affected moisture content of silage. Kernel development at 1/2 – 2/3 ML increased DM and starch reducing fibre concentrations. The two hybrids differed significantly in in vitro DM digestibility (higher for Cisko 300), whereas planting dates and maturity stages had no effects. The analytical data obtained were then used as input variables in a model (Milk2006) for estimating the energy content and potential milk production from feeding silage.
