Abstract

[EN] The Salvador herbarium, the oldest in Spain, is conserved in the Botanical Institute of Barcelona. It was started by Joan Salvador i Boscà in 1622 and continued by their descendants until half-filled of the 18th century. Before 1725 it was ordered according to the Tournefort system by Joan Salvador i Riera. Although it was revised during the 19th century by authors as Pourret or A. C. Costa, it conserves the original pre-linnaean labels. It consists of 4023 sheets, 1216 of which correspond to plants cultivated in European botanical gardens as Montpellier, Paris, Leiden or Rome; 53 of them come from the own botanical garden of the Salvador family, located in Sant Joan Despí (Barcelona).

The poster shows some examples of species cultivated in the Salvador's Botanical Garden with witness in the herbarium and also we indicate the date of their introduction in Europe and their geographic adscription.

Poster presented at the 2nd World Botanic Garden Congress, Barcelona (Spain), 17-22 April 2004: "Botanic Gardens: a World of Resources and Heritage for Humankind".
