Widely varying indexes have been formulated in many countries to obtain information about soil status of heavy metal contamination and its potential toxicity. In this study, these indexes were applied to provide a basis for comparison of heavy metal contamination between the different soils and zones in the marsh of the Natural Park of La Albufera (Valencia, Spain) and the zones of vegetable and fruit crops surrounding the area. This area is a highly industrial zone having a road network. Global evaluation of the results obtained revealed that the higher values of the total content and the extractable fraction of the seven metals studied (Cd, Cu, Pb, Zn, Ni, Co, Cr), are centered in the marshy zones. Results concide with the geographical distribution of the urban and industrial centers in the area.
