Abstract

[EN] A population of Margaritifera margaritifera was found in the Águeda River, a tributary of the Duero, in the province of Salamanca. It is the southernmost known European population of the species. First analyses indicate that it shows a patchy distribution along the river. It appears to be an older population. All specimens are between 74 mm and 118 mm, and more than 80% are between 90 mm and 105 mm. No living juveniles were recorded although both valves of one specimen of 22 mm were found.Building of the Irueña dam will flood the main suitable habitat of this species. We propose (1) an exhaustive sampling of this area in order to relocate the specimens that will be affected by the future dam, and (2) the establishment of a compensatory management plan for the entire basin to ensure the effective reproduction of the adults and the subsequent survival of the juveniles. We also recommend not to raise the height of the future dam, as an increase of only 10 m above the maximum projected water level would have an irreparable effect on the locality where the largest concentrations of these naiads have been found to date.
