Abstract

Inter and intrapopulation variation in floral characteristics is examined for eight populations of Viola cazorlensis, a narrow endemic, in the Sierra de Cazoria (Jaen province southeastern Spain). Peduncle, spur and nectaries length, nectar volume, and the nectaries/spur length ratio, are the floral traits examined. All these characters display considerable variation between flowers. Spurs show also broad variation in shape. Observed variation is due to both marked intrapopulation variability and significant differences between populations in average values for all traits. Differences between populations are not predictably related to their geographical separation. Results are discussed in relation to the endemic nature of the species and some aspects of its reproductive biology.
