Abstract Lagomorphs have lived on the continents of Europe, Asia, and North America since the late Eocene or early Oligocene. Members of both families of Iago morphs have occupied the Iberian Peninsula during that time. The family Ochotonidae, once represented by some 15 species in 5 genera, became extinct Europe (with the exception of Ochotona pus1lla m eastern Russia) at the end of the Pliocene. The Leporidae have been reduced from 7 species in 4 genera to the surviving 3 species in two genera, Lepus and Oryctolagus.
